12,694 children displaced in Manipur violence

100 of whom are traumatized

There are currently 12,694 children residing in relief camps around the northeastern state of Manipur as a result of the ongoing ethnic clashes in Manipur, 100 of whom have suffered severe trauma and require medical attention.

According to information made accessible by the Manipur social welfare department, this was stated in a government announcement.

The welfare department is closely monitoring critically malnourished children who are being transported to JNIMS hospital in the state capital, according to the announcement, which also states that 16 youngsters have already received treatment for their conditions.

The department's group of skilled medical professionals and child psychiatrists work as volunteers to provide counseling to the children who need it.

"Whenever they find such severely traumatized children, they will be identified and taken to professional counsellors," said Ng Uttam Singh, director of the Social Welfare department. For a little bit more than 100 kids, we have carried out this. We hope that this number stays the same and that the soon-to-be traumatized children can resume their normal lives."

“A child may not be traumatized immediately. But that trauma can come up after one week or a month,” he added.

The press release further states that counselors are assigned to each district by district children protection offices to handle the mental health of the displaced children by going to children's homes in relief camps to identify and provide counseling to those who require qualified assistance.

In the meantime, child psychiatrist Dr. Jina Heigrujam, who visited numerous relief camps, stated that expert counseling is crucial to prevent a variety of mental health concerns from arising.
