5 Dead, Over 60 Injured After stage Collapses At Nirvana Laddu Parv In Baghpat

At least five people died and over 60 others, including Jain disciples and police personnel, were injured in a stampede after a makeshift stage collapsed at ‘Nirvana Laddu Parv’ of the first Tirthankara in Jainism, Bhagwan Adinath, in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat on Tuesday.

On Tuesday morning, rescue operations were ongoing to bring out those trapped under the makeshift stage and the authorities have sprung into action.

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the incident and issued directives to the local district authorities to provide immediate relief to the injured people. He also wished for the speedy recovery of those injured in the mishap.

Baghpat District Magistrate, Asmita Lal and Superintendent of Police, Arpit Vijayvargiya rushed to the district hospital to know the wellness of the injured, according to the reports.

DM Asmita Lal confirmed five deaths. While, two more deaths are being suspected, but there is no official confirmation on them yet.

"A ‘machaan’ (makeshift platform collapsed during the 'Laddu Mahotsav' program of the Jain community in Baraut. As per the information coming in, about 20-25 people were injured. Some had general injuries and received first aid before being sent home. 2-3 people are seriously injured, who are undergoing treatment in nearby hospitals," SP Arpit Vijayvargiya said.

Earlier this month, a tragic stampede near Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple, also known as Tirupati, in Andhra Pradesh claimed the lives of at least six people and left 35 others injured. The incident occurred as thousands of devotees gathered to obtain free visit passes to the temple, one of India's busiest and wealthiest religious sites.

According to district collector S. Venkateswar, the stampede happened when the gate was opened, and around 2,500 people surged forward. "A few people fell as the crowd pushed through the gate," he explained.

Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu directed senior officials to visit the site and ensure proper relief measures and medical treatment for the injured. The following day, he personally visited the scene and called for a high-level investigation into the incident.
