BJP faces no-confidence motion in Haryana today

The motion will take place in the Assembly during the ongoing Budget session.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will face no-confidence motion in the Assembly today. The opposition party Congress will move a no-confidence motion against the ruling BJP and the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) led government of Haryana on Wednesday. The motion will take place in the Assembly during the ongoing Budget session.

Speaker Gian Chand Gupta had accepted the motion by the Opposition Congress on March 5 and allowed two hours for discussion. The BJP has 40 seats in the 90-member Haryana assembly and also has the support of 10 JJP MLAs and five independent legislators, according to NDTV. The Congress has 31 seats. Two seats in the assembly are vacant and the majority mark stands at 45.

Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda said that the government had lost trust of the people. "The Congress is going to bring no-confidence motion, Minimum Support Price (MSP) guarantee bill, many adjournments and calling attention motion against the government. We will seek answers on issues such as farmers' neglect, rising unemployment, changes in domicile regulations, rising crime, paper leaks, liquor and registry scams," he said.

JJP chief and deputy chief minister had earlier said in September that he would resign from the post if farmers do not get a guaranteed Minimum Support Price (MSP). Farmers from several parts of Haryana have threatened that they would boycott MLAs if they do not support their cause. The agitating farmers are the core votebase of the JJP due to which this is a matter of concern for the party.
