Train services also disrupted in the region
On Monday night, just hours after the Calcutta high court demanded a report on the clashes that erupted in three districts of the state during Ram Navami celebrations Train services were disrupted as fresh communal violence broke out at Rishra in West Bengal’s Hooghly district.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) that is now on power and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have traded accusations, blaming each other for the violence that erupted in the Howrah district on March 30.
Following the new communal clashes, the internet was suspended, and Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which bans gatherings of more than four people, was reinstated in Hooghly's Rishra and Serampore areas, according to a police official.
Bricks and homemade explosives were thrown near Rishra Railway Station. The ensuing violence spilled onto railway lines, disrupting numerous local and long-distance trains. A police force was dispatched to the site and used batons to disperse a mob that retaliated with stones. A car was also set on fire. The riot-torn areas of Hooghly appeared deserted on Tuesday morning, with most shops shuttered. Picket lines were set up, and cops patrolled the streets in huge numbers.
Mamata Banerjee, the state's chief minister, has issued a warning ahead of the Hanuman Jayanti celebrations on Thursday. "We all respect Bajrang Bali, but they [the BJP] should not be allowed to plan any more riots." Please keep this in mind. This is happening all over the nation," Banerjee said on Monday in East Midnapore.
Suvendu Adhikari, a BJP leader, slammed the administration over the new violence. He mentioned the suspension of train services on the Howrah-Bardhaman line due to violence near the railway station in a tweet. He added that railway services had been restored as a result of the Railway Protection Force's intervention. Adhikari stated that Rishra is on fire and that the entire state government is on vacation in Digha, where Banerjee was scheduled to address TMC workers.
