In Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi district, two sisters were found living with the corpse of their mother, who had died nearly a year ago, in their house in the city's Madarwa area.

The incident was highlighted when the neighbours of the girls did not see them for a few days and also found their house's door closed. Raising the alarm, they informed the girl's relatives, who reached their home and informed the police about the entire incident.

The police reached the home and recovered the woman's body and also found the two girls sitting next to the body.

According to the police, the woman, identified as Usha Devi aged 52 years died on December 8, 2022, but her daughters did not perform her last rites due to financial issues and had been living with her corpse. They didn’t inform anyone about her demise.

To hide the pungent smell of the body, the two daughters, identified as Pallavi Tripathi (27) and Vaishvik Tripathi (17) used to burn agarbattis (incense sticks), police said.

The woman's husband had left home two years ago and did not come home even after his wife's death, police added.

Following the recovery of the corpse, the police took both girls into custody and the incident is being further investigated.
