Gunfight in Manipur Leaves 13 Dead

Two Unidentified Groups Clash

Police reported that on Monday, thirteen people lost their lives in a gunfight between two unidentified groups in the troubled region of Manipur.

According to a police statement on Monday night, an exchange of gunfire involving unknown armed individuals took place in Leithao village, Tengnoupal district.

The statement mentioned that 13 individuals have been killed, and both district police and security forces promptly responded to the scene. A case has been registered in connection with the incident.

A police official noted that the men seemed to be from the valley, expressing suspicion that they might have entered the wrong area after crossing the state from the Myanmar border, approximately 35 km away.

Tengnoupal is primarily a Kuki-Zo-majority district.

Violence erupted between the Meiteis and the Kuki-Zo people on May 3, leading to a mass migration. Meiteis have vacated the hills, while the Kuki-Zo population has left the valley. The ongoing violence has resulted in at least 194 casualties, with over 67,000 people displaced.
