Joe Biden condemns racist attacks on Asian-Americans during pandemic

Mr Biden condemned the "vicious hate crimes" that Asian-Americans have tolerated from the beginning of the pandemic.

US President Joe Biden in the coronavirus address on Thursday, condemned the "vicious hate crimes" that Asian-Americans have tolerated from the beginning of the pandemic by calling it "wrong" and "un-American" that "must stop."

In his first prime time address, while giving details about the progress that has been made in the fight against COVID-19, President Biden said, "Too often, we've turned against one another." Mr Biden decried the "attacks, harassment, blames" Asian-Americans went through during the pandemic that originated in China and also the way they were "scapegoated."

"At this very moment, so many of them, our fellow Americans -- they're on the front lines of this pandemic trying to save lives and still, still they're forced to live in fear for their lives just walking down streets in America," Mr Biden said. According to the activists, discrimination against the Asians has been sparked by talks about the "Chinese virus" by former President Donald Trump and others.

According to a California State University study, the reported anti-Asian hate crimes more than doubled from 49 to 122 last year across 16 major US cities including New York and Los Angeles -- even as overall hate crime fell.
