Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge is likely to be the leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha. The Congress has written to the Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu to appoint Mr Kharge as the leader of opposition who is likely to replace Ghulam Nabi Azad after his retirement.

Current leader of opposition in the Upper House of Parliament, Ghulam Nabi Azad will soon retire as his tenure will end on February 15. Mr Azad is a member of Rajya Sabha from Jammu and Kashmir. Presently, Jammu and Kashmir does not have an Assembly after it was made a Union Territory with the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution.

Mr Kharge was the leader of the party in Lok Sabha from 2014 to 2019. In the previous and current Lok Sabha, the Congress could not get the leader of opposition's post because the numbers were less than the mandatory 10 percent of the total number of seats in the Lower House for claiming the post. Mr Azad gave his farewell speech on Tuesday and said that all Hindustani Muslims should take pride in being an Indian.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said in his farewell speech for Mr Azad in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, "The person who will replace Ghulam Nabi ji (as Leader of Opposition) will have difficulty matching his work because he was not only concerned about his party but also about the country and the House."
