A 7.1 magnitude earthquake felt in Nepal were felt in Delhi NCR and several North Indian areas, including parts of Bihar, on Tuesday morning.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 6.35 am, 93 km northeast of Lobuche, near the Nepal-Tibet border.
Nepal lies in a region highly prone to earthquakes due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which form the Himalayas. This tectonic activity often results in frequent seismic events.
Lobuche, a village in Nepal, is located east of Kathmandu near the Khumbu Glacier. It is approximately 150 kilometers from the capital city and 8.5 kilometers southwest of Everest Base Camp.
Recently, an earthquake with its epicenter in Xizang (Tibet Autonomous Region) caused significant concern. Emergency response teams in Nepal and parts of India are closely monitoring the situation. Authorities have advised people to remain calm and stay prepared for possible aftershocks.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported that the earthquake occurred at 6:35 AM IST with a magnitude of 7.1. The epicenter was located at latitude 28.86°N and longitude 87.51°E, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The NCS shared this information in a tweet, stating:
"Earthquake of Magnitude: 7.1, Date: 07/01/2025, Time: 06:35:18 IST, Lat: 28.86°N, Long: 87.51°E, Depth: 10 km, Location: Xizang."
Two additional earthquakes were recorded later in the morning. The first, a magnitude 4.7 tremor, struck at 7:02 AM IST, with its epicenter at latitude 28.60°N and longitude 87.68°E, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The second, measuring 4.9 in magnitude, occurred at 7:07 AM IST. Its epicenter was at latitude 28.68°N and longitude 87.54°E, at a depth of 30 kilometers.
