Rescue operation is underway…
Nine laborers were trapped within a coal mine situated in the Dima Hasao district of Assam, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday.
Himanta shared the names and details of the trapped workers on his account following an incident in the Umrangso region of the district, reportedly caused by unexpected water entering the site.
“There are reports of several individuals feared to be trapped inside a coal mine in the Umrangso area of Dima Hasao district. However, we cannot confirm the exact number at this moment,” stated Mayank Kumar Jha, the Superintendent of Police (SP) for Dima Hasao, during a conversation with ANI.
The Chief Minister of Assam had earlier offered prayers for the trapped workers and informed that assistance from the army had been sought. Meanwhile, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were en route to the location. “A distressing situation has emerged in Umrangso, where workers are trapped in a coal mine. The exact numbers and their condition remain uncertain. The Deputy Commissioner, SP, and my colleague Shri Kaushik Rai are heading to the site. Praying for everyone’s safety,” he mentioned in a post.
Providing an update on the rescue efforts, he further stated, “We have sought the Army's support in the ongoing rescue operation. Both the SDRF and NDRF teams are on their way to assist with the rescue mission.”
