Phase 2 Voting In Jammu And Kashmir Begins

Omar Abdullah among key candidates…

On Wednesday, 25 September 2024, the second phase of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir began.

It was held after a gap of 10 years. Polling will be held on 26 seats across six districts -- many of them in areas dominated by separatists.

Around 26 lakh voters will decide the fate of 239 candidates.

In the first four hours of polling, a voter turnout of 24.10 percent was recorded.

The Gulabgarh seat in the Jammu region recorded the highest voting percentage at 35.72, followed closely by Poonch Haveli at 34.26.

The maximum voting percentage among the 15 assembly segments in the Kashmir Valley was recorded in Kangan at 30.94.

It was followed by Chrar-i-Sharief at 28.85 percent and Khansahib at 27 percent.

Senior diplomats from the US, Norway, Singapore, and many other countries visited Kashmir to witness the polls.

The delegation visited polling stations in Ompora (Budgam), followed by stops at Amira Kadal and SP College, Chinar Bagh, within the Lal Bagh constituency.

At SP College, delegates had the chance to visit a special pink polling station, managed entirely by women. Several of these polling stations had witnessed very low voter turnout during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Former Chief Minister and National Conference chief Omar Abdullah, who is contesting from Ganderbal and Budgam seats, will be among those facing the electoral test.
